When the Shaykh’s Fears Come True: Learning Lead to Divorce

I previously mentioned (here) what the shaykhs fear about teaching women their rights:

“What if women knew?! What would they do?! How many marriages would this cause to rock??”

The ultimate fear – divorce.

And it has happened.

When discussing these topics with my friend and colleague – Ustadha Iman Daqqaq of Damascus – she told me she had a friend this happened to.

She got a divorce after listening to a pro-women’s rights shaykh.

This led to even Ustadha Iman questioning whether these topics are necessary/beneficial?

My take:

What if her marriage was miserable? And she needed those talks to reclaim her life and even more importantly – her connection to her Deen?

What if it’s not the fault of the knowledge – but the marriage paradigm in our communities itself needs repair??

What if all women heard these talks – and ALL of us started demanding the rights and respect we are given by our Deen?

Wouldn’t it mean that the men would have to step up?

That they’d have to do better than relying on control and Deen-shaming—using hadiths and ayahs to guilt, silence, or spiritually blackmail women into submission?I

I think many of my shaykhs would be quite hesitant to teach women my Islamic Marriage Course.

But as a woman, I’ve seen too many oppressive situations for women.

And my goal is to change that – to empower women with what they need from the Deen, because ladies – yes the Deen does have our back.

We just need to know HOW.
