Conversation between two scholars:

Isma’eel ibn Muhammad, a scholar of hadith and the grandson of the great Sahabi S’ad ibn Abi Waqqas, was sitting with Imam al-Zuhri who was known as the Hafiz (in hadith) of his time.

Isma’eel narrated a hadith upon which Imam Zuhri said, “We never heard this from the hadtih of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ .”

Isma’il said, “Have you heard all the hadiths of the Prophet ﷺ ?”

Zuhri said, “No.”

“Two-thirds?”

“No.”

“Then half?”

“No.”

Isma’eel said, “So this is in the half that you haven’t heard.”
